There Has Been - and Always Shall Be - Batsu Game

Mike and Tim had a great podcasting session this weekend in Topeka (Tim lives there now and Mike was in town for an event).  We've got four more episodes of the podcast recorded and ready to edit.

Here's our update on recent batsu games:

The Green Bay batsu game: Mike and Tim each had to do Four Words - the same Four Words for each.  The Four Words wound up being something related to Mike's event: Southeast, Kansas, Democrats, Barbecue.

The New England batsu game: Apparently, the New England Patriots have a fight song.  Mike's batsu: recite the words to said fight song.

Tim's NFL picks batsu: In a situation similar to Mike's first batsu game regarding the Pitt State shirt, Tim's Houston Texans shirt is on the way.

New team batsu game: Manchester City won the 2015-16 Football League Cup 1-1 (3-1 on penalties) over Liverpool this afternoon.  Mike had a compelling reason to pick the Reds, while Tim picked them at the last second though remembering he had picked them to win the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League.

Batsu games to be determined: the second leg of this year's Champions League will be played in the coming weeks.  Tim's pick (Real Madrid) is up 2-0 on aggregate over Roma, while Mike's pick (Juventus) is tied 2-2 on aggregate with Bayern Munich.

Next recording session will be back in KC with our annual NCAA basketball tournament picks and our 2016 MLB preview.

Mike's Quest for a New NFL Team to Pull For - The Nos

As a result of the continuing NFL Los Angeles debacle that resulted in the wrongful relocation of Mike's former team from St. Louis to LA, Mike has now gone about a month with no team to pull for.

The offseason has officially started, and Mike has gone through the list of the other 31 NFL teams to try to find a new team to root for.

As mentioned in the most recent podcast, no team ranks above a "Maybe."

A lot of factors will play into any final decision, ranging from, but not limited to:

  • The owner's support of either Carson or Inglewood.  Pro-Carson owners (which would also be pro-St. Louis) are viewed more positively then pro-Inglewood (pro-Kroenke) owners.
  • The team's history of winning or losing.
  • The team's coaches through the years.  Coaches Mike doesn't like will affect their ranking.
  • Other factors.
Here's Mike's list of teams he's saying No to - and it's varying degrees of No:

Leaning No

Indianapolis Colts - Pros: This has long been Mike's backup team.  The Colts and the Rams actually have much in common: Carroll Rosenbloom swapped ownership of the two clubs with Bob Irsay sometime in the 1970's, and the two greatest running backs in Rams history - Marshall Faulk and Eric Dickerson - also played for the Colts.  Cons: Current owner Jimmy Irsay ("The Mad Tweeter") was reportedly pro-Inglewood, and the club started making overtures to the St. Louis area less than 24 hours after that fateful vote.

Tennessee Titans - Cons: Mike now knows how his late mother felt when this team, the former Houston Oilers, were moved to Nashville (coincidentally, Jeff Fisher was the Oilers/Titans head coach during this time).  Her nickname post-move: the Spoilers.

Likely No

Atlanta Falcons - Pros: The Dirty Bird still ranks highly in terms of touchdown celebrations.  Cons: Owner Arthur Blank was reportedly pro-Inglewood.  This is also a team that allowed Wade Phillips to coach them.  Lastly, in our discussion of "how old is too old" in regards to stadiums, the discussion centered heavily on Atlanta (granted, we were mostly talking about the Braves' decision to leave 20-year-old Turner Field, but the Georgia Dome - opened in 1992 - isn't that much older and they're replacing it with what I'd describe as a next-to-impossible feat of stadium engineering.

Denver Broncos - Pros: The current Super Bowl champions are heavily referenced in adult cartoons, whether it's Homer Simpson owning them or the South Park kids rooting for them.  They have a great history in terms of winning in the regular season, and the stewards of ailing owner Pat Bowlen stated during the whole LA situation that Kroenke would never be allowed to own the Broncos (Kroenke already owns Denver's NBA Nuggets and NHL Avalanche - and both have done just as lousy as the Rams).  Cons: Historically, that winning tradition hasn't translated to Super Bowls - the most recent one is only their third in eight attempts.  Also, the Wade Phillips factor.  (Yes, I acknowledge he did an excellent job running the Broncos' defense, but as a head coach he's an idiot.)

Detroit Lions - Cons: Mike is already not a fan of Detroit's other pro teams (all of them), and the team - the only NFC team that has failed to make a Super Bowl appearance - has a long history of losing, including an 0-16 season in recent years.

Miami Dolphins - Pros: Historically a great team.  The 1972 Dolphins remain the only undefeated team in current NFL history (unlike the more recent Patriots, the Dolphins did win their Super Bowl).  Cons: That historical success hasn't translated well in recent years.  Owner Stephen Ross was pro-Inglewood.

Philadelphia Eagles - Pros: This is a team Mike respects and has followed off and on.  Cons: Owner Jeffrey Lurie was pro-Inglewood.

Solid No

Buffalo Bills - Cons: This is the team that Mike strongly associates with Wade Phillips' lousy job as a head coach: before the team's last playoff run in 1999, Phillips benched Doug Flutie - with one week to go in the regular season - in favor of Rob Johnson, and it went south from there.  Mike is also a non-fan of current coach Rex Ryan (often referred to on the podcast as "Fat Ass").  The team's new owner was pro-Inglewood.

Carolina Panthers - Pros: Owner Jerry Richardson was on the LA committee and very pro-Carson (therefore, pro-STL).  Cons: The Panthers consistently have a bunch of guys with less than desirable attitudes on their rosters.  See Steve Smith or Cam Newton.  Also, Mike still has bad feelings toward the team stemming from a 2013 regular season game where Sam Bradford got hurt (first of 2 ACL tears) and Chris Long got wrongfully ejected after a fight with the aforementioned Smith.

Washington Football Club - Pros: During his time as a security officer, Mike actually worked with this team.  Cons: Owner Daniel Snyder - known for his bad ownership and overpaying for declining talent - was pro-Inglewood.  This is a team that once hired Marty Schottenheimer as their head coach.  Lastly, the nickname needs to change.

Absolute No

Baltimore Ravens - Cons: This was the team "created" by Art Modell's stunt 20 years ago (unlike Kroenke, Modell had the good sense to never show his face around Cleveland afterwards).  Current owner Steve Bisciotti was pro-Inglewood and had very negative comments toward St. Louis.  Lastly, the Ravens have a history of hiring similar to Carolina's in regards to less than desirable attitudes.

Dallas Cowboys - Pros: This was the team of Mike's late mother, who was raised in southeast Texas.  Cons: Owner Jerry Jones was Kroenke's biggest cheerleader in the whole LA situation.  Also, this team once had Wade Phillips as head coach.

Kansas City Chiefs - Pros: This is Mike's hometown team.  Cons: Too many to count but we'll try.  Mike is especially turned off by Chiefs fans' behavior at Arrowhead (among other things, it's "home of the brave," NOT "home of the CHIEFS").  The team hasn't appeared in the Super Bowl since the 1969 season.  The nickname needs to change.  The team once had Marty Schottenheimer as their coach (the timing of which contributed heavily to Mike's non-love for the team).  In regards to the LA situation, owner Clark Hunt was the only LA committee member to vote against Carson, leading to speculation that he's pro-Inglewood.  Also, the biggest legislative obstacle to the STL stadium project was State Senator Rob Schaaf (R-St. Joseph), whose district includes part of KC's Northland and the team's training camp.  Chiefs fans, stop wasting your time trying to convert Mike.  It will never happen.

New York Jets - Cons: Owner Woody Johnson was pro-Inglewood.  The team has a long history of on-field ineptitude and hiring less than desirable personalities.  "Fat Ass" once coached this team.

San Francisco 49'ers - Cons: They are the blood rivals of Mike's former team.  The sting of that 17 game losing streak to these guys will never go away.

Seattle Seahawks - Cons: In addition to being an up-and-coming rival of Mike's former team, owner Paul Allen (the wealthiest owner in the NFL) was pro-Inglewood.

Mike's Quest for a New NFL Team to Pull For - the Maybes

Here's Mike's list of Maybe teams:

Arizona Cardinals - Pros: The team was in St. Louis from 1960 to 1988, and current owner Mike Bidwill was staunchly pro-STL in the recent situation (note to Jerry Jones: his father was the one who moved the team).  Also, Kurt Warner, who won a Super Bowl for St. Louis, got this team to a Super Bowl.  Lastly, this is the team that the late Pat Tillman (a true American hero despite the suspicious circumstances of his death in Afghanistan) played for.  Cons: A long history of losing - their last league title was won when the team was still in Chicago.

Chicago Bears - Pros: many of Mike's friends - including Tim - are Bears fans, and Super Bowl 20 (Bears over Patriots) was the first Super Bowl Mike remembers seeing.  Cons: Mike has never had a good experience in Chicago and also loathes certain Chicago teams of the Owned-by-Jerry Reinsdorf persuasion.

Cincinnati Bengals - Pros: Owner Mike Brown (inherited the team from his father, the great Paul Brown, and a notorious cheapo) is rumored to be one of the two no-votes in the final 30-2 LA vote.  This, of course, cannot be confirmed.  Cons: Brown's bad ownership (again, attributed to his being a cheapo) and the team's recent spell of postseason ineptitude, which Tim rails against often.

Cleveland Browns - Pros: Mike can tell you from personal experience that the Dawg Pound are great fans.  Cons: No Super Bowl appearances, and historically bad ownership under Randy Lerner (something Aston Villa fans are all too aware of) and now Jim Haslem.  Also, this team, in its pre-Modell state, had Marty Schottenheimer (whom Mike holds in very low regard) as their coach.

Green Bay Packers - Pros: a community owned team that calls home a town of just over 104,000.  Full disclosure: Mike's sister is a fan and owns 1 share of Packers stock.

Houston Texans - Pros: Mike has maternal family ties to Houston and really likes the city.  Also, owner Bob McNair was on the LA committee and worked with STL task force leader Dave Peacock on getting the (now dead) stadium plan together.  Cons: The Texans once had Wade Phillips as their head coach.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Pros: Owner Shad Khan was screwed out of buying the Rams in 2010 by Kroenke.  Since buying the Jaguars, despite consistent rumors that the team will move (they have a lease on their stadium through 2030, folks), Khan is at least trying to make it work in Jacksonville.  Cons: Khan also owns Fulham, which he got relegated from the Premier League in his first year as owner.

Minnesota Vikings - Pros: Mike loves Minneapolis.  Cons: the team has a history of postseason choking and is 0-4 in Super Bowls.  Also, the owner was reportedly pro-Inglewood.

New England Patriots - Pros: Owner Bob Kraft was on the LA committee and supported Carson.  Also, the team is in the middle of a dynasty and has fairly likable players.  Cons: Cheating, especially in Super Bowl 36.  Also, Kraft's ties to Sunil Gulati.

New Orleans Saints - Pros: Mike is half-Cajun, and the Saints represent Cajun Country.  Winning in recent years, including winning Super Bowl 44 over Indianapolis, also help.  Cons: Prior to Hurricane Katrina and the hiring of Sean Payton, the Saints have been a terrible team.  Also, they once had Wade Phillips as their head coach.

New York Giants - Pros: Owner John Mara is a third-generation owner who sat on the LA committee and favored Carson.

Pittsburgh Steelers - Pros: Mike's dad is from Pittsburgh and the Steelers are his team.  The team has 6 Super Bowl victories, the most of any team.  Owner Art Rooney II, another third-generation owner, was on the LA committee and favored Carson.  Cons: the city itself - while Mike's dad is from there, Mike himself is not a big fan on account that it's easy to get lost.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Pros: It's the birthplace of the Tampa 2 defense.  Cons: Pre-Tony Dungy, this team has a terrible history, including starting their existence 0-26.  Also, the Glazer family, which owns the team, also owns a certain team called Manchester United (which Mike famously hates).

Chargers (still in San Diego at the moment) - Pros: Owner Dean Spanos got screwed in the LA situation, but has the first option to go to LA.  Cons: Team has never won a Super Bowl and once hired Marty Schottenheimer.

Raiders (still in Oakland at the moment) - Pros: Owner Mark Davis also got screwed in the LA situation (as a proxy of his late father Al Davis, whom NFL owners still hate), and now has the option to move to LA should the Chargers stay in San Diego.  Davis is also rumored to be one of the 2 no-votes in the final 30-2 vote.  Also, this was the team of Mike's late grandmother.

Next time: the teams Mike ranks as No or Absolute No.

Episode 185 - Pro Football HOF Class of 2016 and More LA Talk

Today's episode is more about NFL business than anything.

We start on a somewhat positive note by talking the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2016:
  • QB Brett Favre
  • QB Ken Stabler
  • WR Marvin Harrison
  • OL Orlando Pace
  • OL Dick Stanfel
  • DL/LB Kevin Greene
  • Coach Tony Dungy
  • Owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr.
We then spend the rest of the time talking further about the NFL's LA situation, which - despite the fact that Mike already lost his team as a result - is still not completely resolved.

The Chargers have signed a deal to eventually move to LA, but will stay in San Diego at least one more year and try to get a stadium deal done there (not likely), while the Raiders continue to explore their options, including Las Vegas.

ESPN (owned by a corporation whose CEO was also screwed in this debacle) just published a piece on the LA situation that mostly confirms a lot of the theories out there and the suspicions of St. Louis sports fans that the process was rigged from the beginning.  Click here to read it.  Also read the St. Louis Post-Dispatch piece that Mike reads for more St. Louis-based context at this link.

Simply put, NFL ownership is deeply divided into old-guard (owners whose teams have been in the family for many years) and new-money (wealthy owners who more recently bought their teams, led most prominently by Jerry F. Jones) groups with a completely bought front office managing things very badly.  It also doesn't help that one NFL exec in particular was completely in the tank for a particular owner in this situation.

Lastly, Mike addresses one "old-guard" team in particular - and it's pretty harsh.  If you are easily offended, you may want to skip this episode.

Episode 184 - Super Bowl Batsu Games

Congratulations to the Denver Broncos on winning Super Bowl 50.

However, Mike and Tim must be punished.

For the team batsu game for Mike and Tim for picking Green Bay: Four Words.  These will be the same four words for each of them, which will be announced later, and will happen next time they get together for the podcast.

For Mike's individual batsu game for picking New England: Tim will select a suitable punishment next time they get together for the podcast.

Mike has also made his pick for the Football League Cup Final between Manchester City and Liverpool:

Liverpool 2-1 City

Tim is welcome to make a prediction for this match as well.

Programming note: Mike will be in Topeka the weekend of February 26 and 27 for Washington Days (an annual Kansas Democratic Party convention).
